BIO
Born, raised and educated in New Orleans, H. Grace Boyle’s preferred method of creating is sculpting. After finishing her first marble carving in 1997, a deep connection was formed. Stone remains her favorite material to use despite its being taxing with which to work. She makes assemblages that are composed of her carvings and repurposed objects and materials. Her interest is also piqued by using the human figure and figural fragments as vehicles for expression. Fabricating public sculpture is another mode of making in which she invests her creative efforts. These are foundations of her practice.
In her work, the parallels between melancholy and humor that coexist in life are emphasized. Although her work is thematically variegated, topics that reappear in her pieces include presence and absence, loss and the passage of time. Mystery and wonder are evoked by questioning the relationships of seemingly unrelated objects, experimenting with scale, and manipulating the spaces these elements inhabit.
She currently teaches sculpture at the University of New Orleans. In 2021, she was awarded the New Roads Scholarship from the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in Vermont. She has shown work at The Front, Good Children Gallery, and the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, LA. She has participated in ArtPrize and ArtFields competitions. Boyle has created three public sculptures which are located in Kenner, LA. She has completed three public pieces. Two are included in the Power Boulevard sculpture collection in Kenner, LA. The third is part of the Kenner Discovery Heath Sciences Academy collection, also in Kenner, LA.
